This course is the 'hands-on' Emergency Department (ED) orthopedics course designed specifically for ED physicians and staff. The course focuses on understanding ED ortho to better manage patients.
Case-based lectures highlight ED orthopedic principles and clinical pearls while reviewing over dozens and dozens of extremity injuries. For example, scaphoid injuries are less common than distal radius fractures but potentially more worrisome. Which age group is at greatest risk of having a scaphoid fracture? What are the complications? How to properly examine for fractures in the ED? Scaphoid fractures are 70% of carpal fractures. What makes up the other 30%? How do we assess for those injuries?
After the course you will:
Be more accurate in your diagnoses
Be more precise with your x-ray ordering and interpretation
Be more confident with your ED reductions and immobilizations, and
Better understand if and when to involve ortho.
