The Northern Medical Program (NMP) is part of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia (UBC). This distributed medical program was the first of its kind in North America and has proven to be a highly successful model of education. Through UBC's Admissions Office, thirty-two medical students are welcomed into the NMP every year and arrive at the beautiful University of Northern British Columbia campus in Prince George each January.
The NMP needs physician teachers who can offer inspired, meaningful education that will encourage students to eventually practice in BC’s northern, rural and remote communities.

Teaching opportunities can take place at the UNBC campus, University Hospital of Northern BC in Prince George, Mills Memorial Hospital in Terrace, Fort St. John Hospital, or in physicians’ offices across BC.
The NMP delivers UBC’s medical curriculum over four years at the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) and the University Hospital of Northern BC (UHNBC).
It incorporates the best practices of rural and remote medical education from around the world, providing outstanding classroom education and early clinical exposure to rural health care delivery.
First semester: At UBC in Vancouver
Remainder of first year; second year: Northern Medical Program in Prince George, primarily at the Dr. Donald Rix Northern Health Sciences Centre at UNBC with experiences in family practice offices and in clinical skills education at UHNBC.
Third year: Core clinical training (clerkships) in Prince George, Fort St. John and Terrace, with the support of physicians who combine patient care with teaching.
Fourth year: Senior clerkships delivered throughout BC, Canada and beyond.
The Ministry of Health compensates physicians who take on the role of supervising other physicians.
The College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC requires that physicians registered in the provisional class have both a sponsoring organization and a supervisor approved by the College.
The College requires that supervisors:
- Be a registrant in one of the full classes of registration
- Practice in the same discipline of medicine as the provisional registrant. If the supervisor is not practicing in the same discipline, a second supervisor must be identified by the sponsor who is of the same discipline and will assist the primary supervisor
- Provide reports in the format required by the College at specified intervals to the College with a copy of the report being provided to the provisional registrant and the sponsor
- Have at least three years of independent practice experience and there must not be a conflict of interest relationship between the supervisor and the provisional registrant.
- Must follow the CanMEDS / CanMEDS-FM competencies including medical expert, communicator, collaborator, manager, health advocate, scholar, and professional.
- Must be unbiased and include the input of other involved health professionals.
- Are required at three months and annually until the provisional registrant is successful in achieving full registration. The College may, at its discretion, request additional evaluation reports.
First Year of Supervision: $400 per week for the first 3 months and $100 per week for the next nine months
Subsequent Years of Supervision (up to a max. of 4 years): $50 per week
Travel and travel related expenses are reimbursed in accordance with Government Financial Policies.
There is a daily per diem of $49.00 which includes meals and an allowance of $14.00 for incidental expenses such as gratuities and personal telephone.
