Drug Shortage: RECOMBIVAX HB Dialysis Formulation

Date

Dear colleagues,

A national shortage will result in BCCDC stocking out of RECOMBIVAX HB® Dialysis Formulation in late May/early June 2019. This shortage is expected to be resolved in January 2020. Hepatitis B ENGERIX® Adult vaccine will be available to be ordered as a substitute.

Currently, RECOMBIVAX HB® Dialysis Formulation is recommended for the immunization of clients with chronic kidney disease and HSCT recipients 20 years of age and older. Hepatitis B ENGERIX® Adult vaccine may be substituted for RECOMBIVAX HB® Dialysis Formulation, using the dose and schedule in the table below, as indicated in Part 4 – Biological Products, Hepatitis B Vaccine Program for Chronic Kidney Disease Clients and Hepatitis B Vaccine Higher Dose Schedule. Please do not delay the administration of Hepatitis B vaccine to these clients during this shortage.

Please note that if a client receives ENGERIX®-B vaccine as dose 1, the client will require a 4-dose series regardless of which vaccine is used to complete the series. If a client has received RECOMBIVAX HB® vaccine as dose 1, the client will only require a 3-dose series regardless of which vaccine is used to complete the series.

Please share this information with your nursing and biologicials management staff.
