Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) Referral Process/Pathways

Referrals to PG MFM:
Complete MFM Referral Form 10-030-5081 and fax to PG MFM for triage.

  • Fetal complications will be prioritized, further capacity for other cases will be determined based on volume of referrals
  • All fetal concerns excluding fetal malformations will go directly to PG MFM for triage (i.e., multiple gestation, fetal growth restriction, oligohydramnios, fetal anatomy not well seen on outside scan), with further re-direction to general OB/Gyn or BCWH MFM when appropriate
  • Maternal conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, or TOLAC counselling go to general OB/Gyn first. If additional complications are present, may be redirected to PG MFM

Referrals to BC Women’s Hospital MFM or Fetal Diagnosis and Therapy Service (FDS) may still be indicated:

BCWH MFM Referral

  • Phone 604-875-2162 and fax 604-875-3255
  • Would be indicated for cases needing fetal therapy, such as advanced TTTS or fetal anemia needing intrauterine transfusion
  • Triaged by BCWH MFM and booked in Vancouver
  • If unsure where to send, may refer to PG MFM and will be redirected to BCWH MFM if needed

FDS Referral – Still indicated for all fetal malformations on ultrasound

  • Phone 604-875-2848 and fax 604-875-3484
  • Triaged by genetic counsellor at BCWH and booked with PG MFM

Local (PG/NI) non-urgent consultation or advice calls:

  • Could be to clarify if MFM consultation indicated or for image reviews for example
  • To go through PG MFM voicemail: Phone: 250-645-6985
  • If no call back within 2 business days and answer is time sensitive, call should then be made to BCWH MFM given 24/7 phone coverage

Urgent/emergency referrals and after-hours consultation: 

If case can be managed by general OB/Gyn while awaiting MFM consultation, call on-call PG OB/Gyn who will then arrange consultation with PG MFM when appropriate.

If MFM input required for case management, call BCWH MFM
