The issue: Pfizer has issued a voluntary recall of several lots of propranolol extendedrelease capsules (Inderal-LA®; 60 mg, 80 mg, 120 mg, and 160 mg strengths) due to the presence of impurity N-nitroso-propranolol above the acceptable concentration limit. Nitrosamines are chemicals common in water and foods, including cured and grilled meats, dairy products and vegetables. Nitrosamine impurities may increase risk of cancer if people are exposed to them above acceptable levels and over long periods of time. The majority of NH supply has been affected and new product is not available at this time.
