SaferCare
The SaferCare project is a multi-year initiative in Northern Health to implement a new electronic medical record system in facilities. The goals of SaferCare are to help healthcare workers reduce paperwork and potential issues that come with conventional paper-based systems, and further build on the successful, high quality care that physicians already provide in the North. Additionally, SaferCare will prepare Northern Health for future technologies that will make the jobs of physicians easier, and healthcare more convenient and enjoyable for both healthcare workers and patients.

Dr. Andrew Deonarine
Medical Lead, Informatics; Medical Lead, SaferCare

Originally from Winnipeg Manitoba, Dr. Andrew Deonarine completed his MD at the University of Toronto. Before that, he completed a Bachelor of Science honours (BScH) and Master of Science (MSc) in biochemistry at Western University. During his time in medical school, he worked on developing several medical software projects, including decision support tools and medical record systems. He then went to the University of British Columbia to enroll in the public health and preventive medicine residency program, completing his Master of Health Science (MHSc), and then a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in bioinformatics at the University of Cambridge through the Clinician Investigator Program, before finally completing his residency training.

More recently, Andrew completed a fellowship in clinical informatics at Harvard Medical School as a Friedman Scholar, and completed American board certifications in preventive medicine and the new sub-specialty of clinical informatics in addition to his Fellow of The Royal College of Physicians of Canada (FRCPC). He hopes to leverage his skills in medical information systems, geospatial informatics, and machine learning to integrate public health and primary care in the North and help deploy new medical record systems to improve practice.
