On March 25, 2025, Dragon Medical One (DMO) will be upgraded to the newest version. This will impact over 1800 users across Northern Health, including physicians, residents, nurse practitioners, and duty-to-accommodate staff.
Since 2018, NH has used Dragon Medical One (DMO) for clinical documentation across various systems, including Cerner, CMOIS, and private office Electronic Medical Records (EMRs).
What’s new with the upgrade?
- Dictation bar is changing (footprint is smaller)
- The command “make that an auto-text” no longer inserts extra characters
- Dragon Medical One no longer terminates unexpectedly in the following scenarios:
- When users roam between workstations
- When a PowerChart user in a Citrix environment switches on the mic and gets a DMA exception
- When dictating in a Citrix environment
- Long auto-texts are now displayed correctly in the Dictation Box
- DMO remembers the user’s previously selected specialty when logging in
- Users can now leave DMO open for more than 10 minutes without interacting and the authentication window won't display
- Dictation is now inserted with correct spacing into Cerner dot phrases in Cerner MPages documents
- When using the voice command "accept defaults" in a formatted auto-text, the auto-text fields now keep their formatting
- If DMO is minimized when the user logs off, DMO remembers this and starts in a minimized state when the user next logs on
What action do DMO users need to take for the upgrade?
For most users working in an NH setting and using an NH computer, no action is required, however, some users may need to restart their computer to see the new version. Some users may see the updates sooner than others due to the software deployment method.
Note: This update does not affect DMO versions used outside of an NH setting, such as in a private clinic. For the most up to date information about versions for private office use, please see Dragon Medical One Product Comparison for details.
Why is this change happening?
This upgrade is essential to ensure Northern Health has access to the latest features, maintains compatibility with clinical information systems, and continues to receive full vendor support. The upgrade will enhance clinical documentation efficiency, support integration with Cerner and other systems, and align with NH's strategic priorities of leveraging technology to improve service coordination and quality.
