The use of bedside ultrasound by clinicians to guide invasive emergency and critical care procedures has been proven to improve success and reduce complications, and is rapidly becoming established as the standard of care. UGEMP provides an opportunity to acquire and maintain the skills required to perform the following procedures using Ultrasound-guidance.  Pre-course Work: Before the course, the students will have access to web-based learning modules. These online modules will demonstrate the cognitive aspects of performing the procedure. Learners will complete this self-directed learning at their convenience, before arriving for the one-day hands-on procedure lab and human patient simulator sessions. (Half the credits are for the online modules).  Onsite at VGH Simulation Centre  Human models will allow for demonstration of human surface landmarks, real-time ultrasound image generation, and human ultrasound anatomy. Ultrasoundable task-trainers that simulate the tactile feel of human tissue will allow for the repeated practice of invasive procedures without harming the human models. The instructors will demonstrate the procedure and will supervise the learners’ performance of the procedures in small groups. Formative evaluation in the form of immediate feedback provided by the instructor will help the learners to monitor their progress and guide their learning.  SEMP Course Description: SEMP Target Audience: physicians practicing emergency care; also open to interprofessional teams of physicians, nurses, paramedics, and respiratory therapist  How often do you save a life? Imagine this scenario: It’s 3 am and an unstable patient with severe trauma rolls into your ED. It’s been years since your last cricothyrotomy, and that was in residency! You are single coverage and the trauma surgeon is 45 minutes away. What do you do? Do you feel comfortable treating such a critically ill patient?  Course Description: When was the last time you put in a chest tube or performed an emergency surgical airway? Would you like to learn to place central lines more safely using Ultrasound guidance? The Simulation-assisted Emergency Medicine Procedures course (SEMP) was designed to allow physicians to acquire, review, and practice their skills in essential life-saving emergency procedures. Onsite at VGH Simulation Centre  The hands-on portion of the course consists of experienced instructors who will demonstrate the procedures and supervise the learners as they practice on animal and realistic plastic models. The learners will have the opportunity to integrate performance of these procedures into the real-time resuscitation of a critically ill patient using the latest Human Patient Simulator technology to create realistic scenarios.  Save the Dates:  SEMP Oct 10 – Vancouver BC UGEMP Oct 11– Vancouver BC UGEMP Nov 8 – Vancouver BC More Information & Registration  Disclaimer: The CME Event Calendar contains information originating from other sources.
