Session #3: Managing school avoidance in the high school years

Description: Children, teens and their families have had big changes in lifestyle and routines in response to COVID-19, and many children will not have set foot in a school for 6 months. Socializing, sleep, and daily living have drastically changed and are about to change again with a proposed return to in-person school. This change compounds existing anxiety for children and families, particularly those who may have already been struggling with school-related anxiety or avoidance. As providers, families will be looking to you for guidance, support and answers on how to have a fresh start, increase school willingness and decrease anxiety.

This webinar series will provide practical, hands on tools you can use in your practice today!

Learning objectives:

1. Understand the developmental needs of teens with school avoidance, with emphasis on comorbid substance use and depression.
2. Describe how to tailor gradual exposure for teens.
3. Advise on medication management.
4. Identify community, family, and individual supports available for this age-range.
