This conference covers the following topics: Ethics, liability, communication and professionalism; Cultural considerations of communicating with patients in Canada; Introduction to Indigenous health​; and Physician self-care and resilience. Speakers: Dr. Steven Yau Dr. Ramneek Dosanjh Elder Bruce Robinson Dr. David Tu Dr. Trudy Nasmith Dr. Tahmeena Ali Dr. Catherine Pound Dr. Derek Puddester Dr. Peter Gibson Doris Au Yeung Julie Kwan Learning objectives: Intellectualize and have an emotional understanding of the historic and ongoing determinants of health for Indigenous people in Canada. Describe the challenges to providing health care to Indigenous people and strategies to improve outcomes. Recognize the physician’s role and the role of Traditional Elders and culture in improving the health of Indigenous Peoples. Identify the cultural demographics in BC. Recognize strategies for effective communication in Canadian health care system. Identify local resources to support communication between patients and care providers. Recognize how one’s own cultural beliefs and attitudes impact relationships with patients. Review common medical-legal risks for physicians. Describe common pitfalls in documentation. Review specific documentation issues. Examine various factors that influence resilience. Identify areas of dissatisfaction in your life. Identify one simple thing that you can do to make a difference in your wellness.
